What we use:  In 2014-2015 Bernardsville Middle chose to adopt the Connected Mathematics program (CMP) to teach the New Jersey Student Learning Math grade level standards.  This program has been phased in over the past few years in each grade level math course (excluding Algebra 1).

Why:  Connected Mathematics (CMP) is focused on research and the belief that students learn mathematics best when it has been taught through problem solving.  CMP is a problem-centered curriculum promoted by an inquiry-based classroom environment.  According the program's website:

All students should be able to reason and communicate proficiently in mathematics. They should have knowledge of and skill in the use of the vocabulary, forms of representation, materials, tools, techniques, and intellectual methods of the discipline of mathematics, including the ability to define and solve problems with reason, insight, inventiveness, and technical proficiency

Originating at the Michigan State University and published by Pearson, CMP has been developed over the last 25 year by teams of mathematics, educators, and researchers across disciplines.  This program continues to grow based on research about learning, teacher development, and field tests in actual classrooms.  The problem fosters the development of a mathematical curiosity, encourages disciplinary discourse, and explores the conceptual strands to prepare students for the rich problems they will encounter beyond school.

The Connected Mathematics program focuses on:
  • Cooperative learning and classroom discourse - supporting student-centered investigation of mathematical problems through exchanges between students and between teachers and students;
  • Equity and motivation in problem solving - providing learning tasks and support the engage and sustain the interest and effort of students with very diverse background experiences, values, interests, and abilities;
  • Conceptual and procedural knowledge -  recognizing the interplay of conceptual understanding and computational skill by setting problems contexts that reveal the web of mathematical strands and development progression of knowledge;
  • Proportional reasoning - building on the relationship between quantities, figures, and functions so students can see and use mathematical patterns and properties to solve problems; and
  • Mathematical modeling -  exercising the critical reasoning skill of analyzing symbols, systems, and situations; representing challenging problems concretely and abstractly; and communicating solution strategies in thorough yet clear ways.
