Every year on October 21st, the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) celebrates International Archaeology Day in honor of archaeology and its contributions to society. Along with archaeological organizations from around the world, the AIA organizes programs and activities such as a simulated dig, a presentation from a visiting archaeologist, and more!
This year, Bernards High School teacher Jared Ciocco learned that the AIA was hosting an ArchaeoDoodles contest open to students where they were invited to create an illustration or graphic design to be included into the official AIA glossary of archaeological terms, one of the most popular resources on their website. Amongst the 15 terms offered were Alluvial Deposit, LiDAR, Midden, and Tell.
“In my Latin classes, I always talk to my students about my experiences volunteering at a dig in Orvieto, Italy,” said Ciocco. “I traveled there for two summers during graduate school, studying ancient history, Latin, and other fields of Classics. Each year I find that many of my students are fascinated by the details of the dig, and archaeology itself.”
When Ciocco presented the ArchaeoDoodles contest opportunity, two students with a passion for art were interested. Senior Julia Binns submitted one entry and Junior Kayli Kinney submitted two.
