Blood Drive

The National Honor Society of Bernards High School hosted its annual Blood Drive on November 21, 2023.

Over the course of five hours, over 40 students and staff members visited the Community Room and gave the gift of life. “I am grateful to see so many people take part in this annual event. There is always a critical need for blood, and year after year the students and staff at Bernards High School always step up to help,” said Theresa Murphy, National Honor Society advisor. There are currently 83 seniors in the Bernards High School National Honor Society. NHS members took to the high school halls to spread the word about the blood drive, answered questions about blood donation, and signed students and staff up for this service opportunity.

The blood supply in the state of New Jersey is at a low. However, thanks to the success of the BHS Blood Drive, the Vitalant Blood Center mobile unit collected over 30 units of blood to help combat the shortage. All blood and platelets collected go to those in need locally. After the collection, SHSD students and staff visited the recovery table for food and fellowship, enjoying baked goods and conversation, but what they left with was the knowledge that their actions truly made a difference in the lives of others.

Dr. Brian Brotschul, Superintendent of Schools, said “Here in Somerset Hills, we believe in placing students in the position to lead and to do so well and with great purpose.  The  National Honor Society Blood Drive is another example of SHSD students paying it forward and leading important causes.  We applaud their work and the greater Somerset Hills communities certainly benefit.”

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood and/or platelets. Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S. Additionally, nearly 5,000 units of platelets and 6,500 units of plasma are needed daily in our country. The needs are real, and donations are always an amazing way to do for others going through tough times. So in the spirit of “thanks” and “giving” please consider donating blood, platelets, or plasma this holiday season.
