Hello, My Name Is...
Dr. Flynn grew up just over the hill in Randolph, NJ. An only child, Dr. Flynn learned that books can be great companions, and her love of words and stories grew throughout her years in school there. She attended Boston College with the help of the Governor's Teaching Scholarship. When she returned to New Jersey after graduation in 1993, she was hired to teach eighth grade humanities and writing in Hillsborough. She earned Teacher of the Year honors there in her third year on the job. She became the head field hockey coach at Hillsborough High School and enjoyed working with the athletes for over a decade. Simultaneously, she received her Master's Degree in English Education from Rutgers University and used it to move up to teach at the high school level. Currently, she lives in Chatham with her husband, her two sons, Teddy and Colin, and her dog, Bear.
Bernardsville recruited her when it moved to the current "block" format for literacy classes, and she has been teaching literacy at Bernardsville Middle School since 2001. (She can't believe it has been that long! Where has the time gone? she wonders.) In 2013, BMS awarded her Teacher of the Year. She completed the coursework for her Doctor of Letters degree at nearby Drew University, and she wrote a creative dissertation, a novel set in medieval Europe. She's currently looking for an agent with the hopes of publishing the book!
Dr. Flynn uses a Writer's Workshop format with lots of one-on-one and small-group instructional conferences to improve student writing. She has fun teaching the vocabulary text since a myriad of creative activities can be incorporated into class lessons. Because she herself loves to read, she tries to instill that in her students, encouraging them to ask deep, meaningful questions and make personal connections to the characters and conflicts in the stories read in Reader's Workshop. Dr. Flynn comes to BMS each morning with a positive attitude, knowing that the efforts she and her students make here pave the way for their successful futures.
